Building Narrative

Building Narrative is an interdisciplinary architecture, design and research studio based in
Hong Kong. Jeffrey Cheng established the studio in 2018. Our medium is material and
memory, construction and narration, with the aim to create thoughtful experiences rooted to a
particular place, time, and culture. Since 2024, Building Narrative operates a second
workshop in Guangzhou.
We service clients with a story to tell, often with cross-disciplinary interior, architecture and
landscape requirements. The resulting experience has been diverse, with residential,
hospitality, F&B and workplace design expertise. Projects have been published by the Hong
Kong Institutes of Architects, Design Anthology, New Norm, South China Morning Post
amongst others. We were recently featured at the Hong Kong Exhibition at the Biennale
Architecttura 2023, Venice.
Research activities support the design work with an emphasis on material innovation and
local design culture. Yueng Yeung; Hong Kong Tea and Coffee Houses was published in 2021
and ongoing research into public amenities in Hong Kong estate housing is supported by
Design Trust and the Hong Kong Institute of Architects.
