Rose Bay Marina Gangway and Services Pedestal | Allen Jack+Cottier Architects

The Rose Bay Marina Gangway and Services Pedestal project involved the design of marina fixtures and fittings as part of the overall renovation and development of the marina. The client, Addenbrooke wanted to create a marina that matched the design quality of the yachts that would berth there. Peter Ireland, Principal of AJ+C, decided to take a fresh look at the gangways, handrails and service pillars from the perspective of the highly advanced yacht building industry. Peter approached yacht builders to help analyse the basic functionality of fittings and gangways and then set out to develop and improve their designs using the best of modern technologies. The gangway combines a graceful arching design with the innovative approach of using a rigid central spanning member which incorporates utility raceways that conduct water and power cables to the floating pontoons. The shape of the balustrade was developed using physical and computer modelling to create a form that is ‘liquid’ but also strong and sculptural, taking its references from modern yachts and the natural environment. The carbon fibre services pillars were influenced by the minimum bending radius of the heavy power cabling connecting to the rear mounted outlets.
