House Extension

The aim of this project was to build an extension to an old semi-detached house, which didn’t interfere with the existing urban scheme on historical street in Wroclaw, but at the same time fulfilled function and space expectations of the investors (4 person family). We proposed a 2-storey cuboid in the backyard, connected with the old part of the house in a way, which doesn’t [negatively] affect the shape of existing building. On the one hand it is a background for the existing building and on the other hand it creates a natural synergy between the old and new part. We managed to satisfy the investors by the functional layout and developed the minimalistic shape of a tight box that contrasts with the traditional red, pitched roof house. Additionally, the box is clad with vertical wooden planks intersected with narrow, high aluminium windows, which helps to underline the separateness of old and new. We started the design to one segment of the semi-detached house and after it was developed, the neighbours decided to do the same. This resulted in a double extension in the same scheme to both segments; the appreciation was the best compensation for us as architects. The house received a 2nd prize for single-family house in "Piękny Wrocław 2012" competition.
