a conversion of an old boiling room to a company headquarters with small scale production Lochovice / Czech Rep. / 2013
There is an old paper factory in the Litávka valley in the Czech mountain range Brdy. The boiling room doesn’t serve its original purpose anymore. Projektil was asked to carry out the reconstruction of the boiling room to make it a company headquarters with small-scale production.
Projektil embraced the qualities of the industrial architecture already present there and was careful not to override it. A self-supporting steel frame was inserted into the space of the boiling room, which effectively filled all the empty spaces within. Light and colour became the main means of the building’s revival.
This project is a contribution to the discussion whether the seemingly purposeless empty buildings within the premises of old and decrepid factories are indeed unutilisable or not. It concerns buildings which truly represent functionalism. We are convinced that all that can be done to save such buildings has to be done, especially in the context of the contemporary non-authorial systemic industrial buildings, which can be found everywhere from Mongolia to Mexico.
