Given the grave ethical and environmental consequences of industrial meat and animal-product production and the recent breakthroughs in in-vitro meat, egg and milk production, this project proposes an urban farm-factory. Linking to the historical use of the area as New York City’s meat-packing district, MEAT CITY addresses these issues by eliminating food transportation and its associated environmental effects and removes the need to slaughter animals.
From the high line the food production facilities are instantly visible, removing the metaphorical barrier that separates us between food production and food on our plate. MEAT CITY aims to normalize and popularize the consumption of in-vitro meat, eggs and milk.
The residential portion of meat city proposes micro-units as a response to the recent boom of macro-condos in New York City available only to the top 1% of the 1%. This project takes the position that city life is not only for the upper class but should be attainable for all.
