Harbor Drive Pedestrian Bridge | Safdie Rabines Architects
Downtown San Diego, CA San Diego / United States / 2015
Completing San Diego's 100-year-old vision of a Park-to-Bay link, the Harbor Drive Pedestrian Bridge connects Balboa Park to San Diego Bay and provides a safe crossing over the heavily traveled Harbor Drive, existing train and trolley tracks. It also connects the bay-side San Diego Convention Center and multi-level parking garage to a main route into the city’s downtown and the Petco Park. The 500-foot curved span of the bridge is supported by a distinctive, 130-foot-tall inclined pylon that supports stainless steel wrapped suspension cables attached along one edge of the bridge deck. A structural glass elevator tower with two elevator cabs connects the plaza level to the bridge deck, showcasing the elevators’ inner-workings.
