From Salamina to Corfu crossing Azio and Lepanto, different cultures and believes find their scene of battle. The fragrances and spices smell has characterized instead the biggest mall in the world. The Mediterranean sea, from the latin expression medius terraneus, links Europe, Asia and Africa. This “mid land”, crossroads of several populations, integration’s and disgregation’s place, mantains historic continuum characters able to link past and future and to put men inside a unitary history. On a stage like this develops the epopee of each time new heroes; it is a story of crossings and meaningful mixings. Ulisse and Semhar are both heroes but they have got a different aspect. Nowaday, the countenance of a woman, marked by dispair, exhausted by tiredness, is placed side by side to the mitological character. The new omeric heroes are still crossing the Mediterranean sea, following that course, old like the world. This travel starts far away ever without baggage; from the Horn of Africa, Nigeria or Eyipt to connect in Agadez or Khartoum. Hundreds kilometers of sand separate the oasis from Sabah to arrive finally to Tripoli, the last threshold before the Mediterranean sea. Land and water mix into a unique and huge expanse in which everything semms the same. The horizon is just a line. In the desert and in the sea, scenery of humanity in transit, so in not so easy to get one’s bearing. The light becomes in this project point of reference, sense of direction and auspice for the emigrants. The travel is de-signed by a net in which oasis, buoys and cost tower are knots: “islands” of a way of gradual hope. On terra firma, part of a defensive system organized that put them into a complex system of comunication, the mediterranean cost towers have got in the project a new meaning, becaming welcome symbols. The tank towers, once containing water, are now converted in the project into natural light caskets through the use of light tramps. By day photonic christals allow to trap the sun light that by night is emitted through a luminous beam. On the sea instead a luminous buoys system, giving the picture of the emigrants ways, has got a double role. In analogy with the constellations, indeed, it is a new navigation instrument and at the same time puts in action the communication between the emigrants and their relatives in their native countries. The light becomes “travel’s company” and at the same time bring a thought. A mother, an husband, a son feel constantly the need to allow to arrive to their relative by the sea their thought but this is not possible, it wont happen. So, we imagine, by the sunset, that run into the direction of the closest port to their house, to donate a light, a night star to their lover.

Da Salamina a Corfù passando per Azio e Lepanto culture e credi differenti trovano il loro teatro di battaglia. Il profumo di aromi e spezie ha invece caratterizzato quello che fu il più grande centro commerciale del mondo. Il Mediterraneo, dal latino medius terraneus, lega Europa, Asia e Africa. Questa “ terra di mezzo”, crocevia di numerose popolazioni, luogo d’integrazione e disgregazione, conserva in sé i caratteri di un continuum storico capace di unire passato e futuro e di collocare gli uomini entro una storia unitaria. Su un palcoscenico uguale si dispiega l’epopea di sempre nuovi eroi; è una storia di attraversamenti e di significativi mescolamenti. Ulisse e Semhar sono entrambi eroi ma dal volto diverso. Al personaggio mitologico è affiancato, oggi, il volto di una donna segnato dalla disperazione, stremato dalla stanchezza. I nuovi eroi omerici passano ancora dal Mediterraneo, seguendo quella rotta, antica come il mondo. È un viaggio che inizia da molto lontano senza mai una valigia; dal Corno d’Africa, dalla Nigeria o dall’Egitto per congiungersi ad Agadez o a Khartoum. Centinaia di chilometri di sabbia separano le oasi da Sabah per giungere finalmente a Tripoli, ultima soglia prima del Mediterraneo. Terra e acqua si fondono in un’unica e immensa distesa in cui tutto appare uguale. L’orizzonte si limita ad una linea. Nel deserto e nel mare, scenari di umanità in transito, infatti non è agevole orientarsi. La luce diviene in questo progetto punto di riferimento, orientamento e auspicio per i migranti. Il viaggio viene di-segnato da una rete di cui oasi, boe e torri costiere ne sono i nodi: “isole” di un percorso di graduale speranza. Sulla terraferma, parte di un sistema difensivo organizzato che li inseriva entro un complesso sistema di comunicazione, le torri costiere del mediterraneo assumono nel progetto un significato nuovo, divenendo simboli di accoglienza. I serbatoi delle torri, un tempo contenenti acqua, sono convertite nel progetto in scrigni di luce naturale attraverso l’impiego delle light traps. Di giorno cristalli fotonici consentono di intrappolare la luce del sole che di notte viene sprigionata sotto forma di fascio luminoso. In mare invece un sistema di boe luminose, restituendo il disegno delle rotte dei migranti, svolge un duplice ruolo. In analogia alle costellazioni, infatti, funge da nuovo strumento di navigazione e al contempo attiva un meccanismo di comunicazione tra i migranti e i loro cari rimasti in patria. La luce diviene “compagna di viaggio” e contemporaneamente veicola un pensiero. Una madre, un marito, un figlio sentono costantemente il bisogno di far arrivare, al proprio caro in mare, il loro prezioso pensiero ma è impossibilitato e di fatto questo non avviene. Così li immaginiamo, al tramonto, che corrono verso il porto più prossimo alla loro casa, per donare una luce, una stella nella notte alla loro amata.
