The renovation and interior design of this 160 m2 apartment, situated in a 100-year-old building in Barcelona’s uptown Sarrià-Sant Gervasi neighborhood, combines classical and contemporary touches.

The project began with consideration of the property’s near-rectangular proportions and its corner location, with two street-facing facades and another to the rear, as well as the building’s central patio to which the apartment has direct access.

To make the most of the natural light from the apartment’s multiple windows, the new layout would incorporate an open living space with a kitchen island, dining area and a home office.

Conceptually, the design grew from a central cube built around the patio. This geometrical space encompasses not only the patio but also all four bathrooms, as well as hidden storage solutions. Movement in the apartment flows around the cube, from the entrance hall through to the main corridor, up to the master bedroom and the open living space.

The cube’s distinctive shape is emphasized by dark, monochromatic color choices that create a contrast to the rest of the apartment.

In the kitchen, that contrast is tempered by a natural thematic continuation, with clean lines, rectangular planes and dark lacquered finishes. The kitchen discretely conceals within its custom-made carpentry a fully equipped laundry room, and extends into the glass-walled home office.

Original elements within this centennial property, such as cornices and ceiling ornaments, were reconstructed and renovated with modern technology, adding state-of-the-art illumination for optimal efficiency and convenience.

Like the project as a whole, this embodies a harmonious synthesis of the old and the new: contemporary minimalism and clean lines with classical aesthetic flourishes, harmoniously combined.
