Setouchi Hideaway Resort AMERI | TetraWorks

The inn is located on the remote island of Momoshima, off the coast of Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture, and rents out a single building.

Momoshima is a small, isolated island with a circumference of about 12 km, and the current population is less than 400, a figure that has been declining over time.

In the northwestern part of the island, there is a peninsula-like outcrop of land that was once a prosperous vacation spot, dotted with land and buildings that had been abandoned for many years. The plan for this one-room inn came amidst a growing movement to utilize these lands and buildings in order to revitalize this area, and by extension, the island of Momoshima.

The site is located about 30 meters from a sandy beach where the gentle waves of the Seto Inland Sea lap the shore.

In designing the building, we sought to maximize the charm of the island.

In order to maximize the view of the sea for visitors, we designed the guest rooms to have a “view room” with a raised floor level to provide a view to the opposite shore, and to have this view room protrude from the outer perimeter wall of the building to create iconic proportions.

On the south side of the building, an outdoor space enclosed by a board fence is created and connected to the interior space through a large opening, thereby extending the functions of each. 

The architecture takes advantage of the charm of the island.

We hope that the charm of the architecture will contribute to the revitalization of the island and be passed down to future generations.

広島県尾道市の沖合に浮かぶ離島「百島」に建つ一棟貸しの宿である。

百島は外周約12kmほどの小さな離島で、現在の人口は約400人弱と時代と共に減少の一途をたどっている。

島の北西部にある半島状に突き出した場所に、かつて別荘地として栄えていた場所があり、そこには長年放置されていた土地や建物が点在していた。このエリアを、ひいてはこの百島を再生していくため、それらの土地や建物を活用する動きが活発化する中で、今回の一棟貸しの宿の計画を行った。

瀬戸内海の穏やかな波が打ち寄せる砂浜から30mほどの場所にある敷地が計画地である。
設計にあたっては島の持つ魅力を最大限に活かす建物にすべく計画をすすめた。

客室へは訪れる人の海への眺望を最大化するため、床面を上げた「眺望室」を設けることで対岸まで望める眺望を得つつ、この眺望室を建物外周壁線から跳ね出させることでアイコニックなプロポーションとなるよう計画を行った。
建物南面には板塀で囲まれた屋外空間を設け、室内空間と大きな開口部を通してつながることで各々の機能を拡張させている。

島が持つ魅力を活かした建築。
その建築の魅力によって島の再生に貢献することができ、後世に継承していくことができることを願う。
