Nestled in the vibrant Bernal Heights neighborhood of San Francisco, the Anderson House
represents a masterful reinvention of a long-neglected Victorian cottage. The project
harmoniously blends contemporary design with the home's historic charm, resulting in a
visually striking and functionally advanced living space.

Originally, the house was a jumble of small, dark rooms resulting from multiple
uncoordinated additions and renovations over the years. The comprehensive renovation
initiated a complete transformation, starting with the demolition of the cramped interior to
make way for a radically new floor plan tailored to the modern needs of the clients.

The heart of the home now beats in a large, open-plan living area on the main floor,
strategically organized around a central core that houses the stairs and a bathroom. This
configuration optimizes the movement flow within the house and introduces an
abundance of natural light. The use of a bright, subtle material palette further enhances
this effect, ensuring that light permeates every corner of the home, creating a space that is
both comfortable and lively.

Ascending the stairs, the transformation unfolds, as multiple small rooms give way to a
grand, luxurious primary suite. This new space, adorned with cathedral ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows, frames views of San Francisco Bay and provides access to a new roof
deck. The suite becomes a private retreat, filled with light and offering expansive views that
connect the residents with the cityscape, evoking a sense of grandeur and exclusivity.

Addressing the challenge posed by local zoning codes that restricted volumetric
expansion, the design cleverly incorporates additional living space by excavating the
basement. This move adds 400 square feet to the home’s area. Large windows in the
basement introduce significant natural light and offer serene garden views, while polished
concrete floors provide a modern, durable finish.

Through thoughtful design and meticulous attention to detail, the Anderson House now
stands as a testament to the potential of adaptive reuse in historical contexts. It provides a
modern home full of light, space, and connection to its urban setting.
