A house in the old jewish quarter of Seville | Guillermo Vázquez Consuegra

The house is located at the bend in Abades Street in the Santa Cruz quarter, the old jewish quarter of Seville. It is an 18th-century house with two storeys, to which a second storey was added in the first half of the last century. Its unique situation in the street allows it to have two wide façades (north and east) and a third, smaller one (south), to which the house will open up for the first time. 

The proposal seeks to transform this single-family house, organised around a tiny central courtyard, into two flats and the Plural art gallery. The project should integrate these uses, achieving total independence in the functioning of both. The art gallery should be developed on as much of the ground floor as possible and the flats should have independent access. 

To this end, the project maintains the organisation of the openings in the main façade unaltered, modifying the dimensions and opening new ones on the east and south façades, giving the latter a new access to the building: access to the flats and a second entrance to the art gallery. 

The new interior organisation responds to the location of the small inner courtyard and to the layout and orientation and character of the three façades. The main façade, open to the long perspective of Abades street; the east façade, which corresponds to the narrowing of the street as a consequence of its double bending; and the south façade, previously very closed, which now opens onto the main axis of the neighbourhood. 

The vertical communication system - new staircase and lift - is now located in the dark corner of the plot, between the party walls and the courtyard, so that the courtyard, now covered, becomes the vestibular space of the flats. All the rooms will open directly onto the façades. 

The ground and first floors were resolved with a structure of wooden beams and joists, which have been maintained, supported by load-bearing walls, partially replaced on the ground floor by a slender metal structure in order to give the art gallery greater spatiality. The second floor has a metallic structure and the courtyard is covered with a glass roof, fitted with an opening device that ensures the thermal regulation of the construction.

La casa se sitúa justo en el quiebro de la calle Abades del barrio de Santa Cruz, antigua judería de Sevilla. Se trata de una casa del siglo XVIII con dos plantas de altura a la que se añade, ya en la primera mitad del siglo pasado, una segunda planta. Su singular situación en la calle le permite contar con dos amplias fachadas (Norte y Este) y una tercera (Sur) más reducida, a la que la casa se abrirá por primera vez. 

La propuesta trata de transformar esta casa unifamiliar, organizada en torno a un diminuto patio central, en dos apartamentos y en la galería de arte Plural. El proyecto debería integrar estos usos consiguiendo total independencia en el funcionamiento de ambos. La galería de arte debería desarrollarse en la mayor extensión posible de la planta baja y los apartamentos deberían contar con acceso independiente. 

Para ello el proyecto mantiene inalterable la organización de huecos de la fachada principal, modificando dimensiones y abriendo otros nuevos en las fachadas Este y Sur, dotando a esta última de un nuevo acceso a la edificación: el acceso a los apartamentos y un segundo ingreso a la galería de arte. 

La nueva organización interior responde a la localización del pequeño patio interior y a la disposición y orientación y carácter de las tres fachadas. La principal, abierta a la larga perspectiva de la calle Abades; la fachada Este que se corresponde con el estrechamiento de la calle, como consecuencia de su doble acodamiento; y la Sur, antes muy cerrada, que se abre ahora al eje principal del barrio. 

El sistema de comunicación vertical —nueva escalera y ascensor— se localiza ahora en el ángulo oscuro de la parcela, entre las medianeras y el patio, de manera que éste, ahora cubierto, deviene en espacio vestibular de los apartamentos. Todas las estancias se abrirán directamente a las fachadas. 

Las plantas baja y primera estaban resueltas con estructura de vigas y viguetas de madera, que se han mantenido, apoyadas en muros de carga, sustituidos parcialmente en planta baja por una esbelta estructura metálica a fin de dotar de una mayor espacialidad a la galería de arte. La planta segunda se resuelve con estructura metálica y el patio se cubre con una montera de vidrio, dotado de dispositivo de apertura que garantiza la regulación térmica de la construcción.
