Alicante University Entrepreneurship Centre | Guillermo Vázquez Consuegra

After ten years of hibernation - the project was drafted between 2007 and 2009 - the University of Alicante has undertaken the construction of only a part of the Business Creation Centre, equivalent to half of the building. Therefore, there is still to be built, in a second phase with no start date, a large part of the building that will allow its completion and correct understanding. 

The Entrepreneurship Centre is one of the first facilities to colonise the currently vacant land of the University of Alicante Science Park, separated from the University Campus by the A7 motorway leading to Valencia. A green pedestrian corridor crossing under the motorway will connect the two university campuses. 

On the other hand, the functional programme contemplates the presence of office-laboratory modules for science and technology-based companies, versatile and flexible spaces equipped with complex installations, with the possibility of being increased or replaced in the future. The presence of these facilities will therefore be a determining factor in the formal and spatial organisation of the building. 

From the joint consideration of both issues arises the formal layout of the project: a U-shaped building, where the connection between the two arms constitutes the main body that houses the common areas of the Centre, such as the foyer, the auditorium, the cafeteria-restaurant and the service areas corresponding to the business laboratories. A slender piece, very closed but at the same time excavated in its volume, emerging from the zigzagging green corridor. 

The two parallel arms serve the pulsating heart of the start-up, i.e. the laboratories, administration and training rooms, enclosing a long, narrow, landscaped, excavated courtyard, which is nothing more than a large container for installation ducts, veiled behind slender lattices of angular aluminium louvres. Lightweight metal ladders climb between the walkways, ensuring their correct use and maintenance. 

The project pays special attention to the spaces destined for circulation and access to the laboratory modules, forming on the main façade, the one that faces the green corridor, a large cantilever folded in multiple breaks, which characterises its interior space and the image of the building. 

These galleries, beyond their condition of transit spaces, are shaped into living and relationship spaces, of different dimensions and characteristics, open to the lushness -to come- of the vegetation outside. Furthermore, and this is a key consideration, they constitute a passive thermal regulation system for the building. A linear succession of small courtyards cross all the levels, which together with the movable louvres located laterally on each of the floors control the access of air from outside. 

In winter, these louvres will remain hermetically closed and the galleries will be transformed into buffer spaces with a higher temperature than the outside, acting as a thermal cushion and thus minimising heat loss from the building. In summer, with the opening of the louvres, ventilation will be produced by the chimney effect by letting the hot air pass through the courtyards until it dissipates through the roof. At night, the louvres will open automatically, renewing the space with cooler air than during the day. An efficient passive thermal regulation system that becomes the bioclimatic engine of the building.

Tras diez años de hibernación – el proyecto se redactó entre 2007 y 2009 - la Universidad de Alicante ha acometido la construcción de sólo una parte del Centro de Creación de Empresas, equivalente a la mitad del edificio. Por tanto resta aún por construir, en una segunda fase sin fecha de inicio, buena parte del edificio que permitirá su completamiento y correcta comprensión. 

El Centro de Creación de Empresas es uno de los primeros equipamientos que coloniza los terrenos, hoy baldíos, del Parque Científico de la Universidad de Alicante, segregado del Campus Universitario por la autovía A7 que conduce a Valencia. Un corredor verde peatonal que cruza bajo la autopista conectará ambos recintos universitarios. 

Por otra parte el programa funcional contempla la presencia de módulos de despachos-laboratorios para las empresas de base científico-tecnológica, espacios versátiles y flexibles dotados de complejas instalaciones, con la posibilidad de ser incrementadas o sustituidas en el futuro. Por tanto la presencia de estas instalaciones será determinante en la organización formal y espacial del edificio. 

De la consideración conjunta de ambas cuestiones surge la disposición formal del proyecto: un edificio en forma de U, donde la conexión entre ambos brazos constituye el cuerpo principal que aloja las zonas comunes del Centro, tales como el vestíbulo , el auditorio, la cafetería-restaurante y los locales de servicio correspondientes a los laboratorios de empresas. Una pieza esbelta, muy cerrada pero al mismo tiempo excavada en su volumen, saliendo al paso del zigzagueante corredor verde. 

Los dos brazos paralelos atienden al corazón pulsante de la start-up, esto es, los laboratorios, la administración y las aulas de formación acotando un largo y estrecho patio excavado y ajardinado, que no es sino un gran contenedor de conductos de instalaciones, velados tras esbeltas celosías de lamas angulares de aluminio. Livianas escaleras metálicas trepan entre las pasarelas asegurando su correcto uso y mantenimiento. 

Especial atención presta el proyecto a los espacios destinados a circulaciones y acceso a los módulos de laboratorios, conformando en la fachada principal, aquella que se enfrenta al corredor verde, un gran voladizo plegado en múltiples quebradas , que caracteriza su espacio interior y la imagen del edificio. 

Estas galerías, más allá de su condición de espacios de tránsito, se conforman en espacios de estancia y relación, de dimensiones y características diversas, abiertos a la frondosidad –por venir- de la vegetación exterior. Además, y esta consideración es clave, se constituyen en un sistema pasivo de regulación térmica del edificio. Una sucesión lineal de pequeños patios atraviesan todos los niveles, que junto a las lamas móviles situadas lateralmente en cada una de las plantas permiten controlar el acceso de aire del exterior. 

En invierno, estas lamas permanecerán cerradas herméticamente y las galerías se transformarán en espacios buffer con temperatura superior a la exterior actuando como colchón térmico y minimizando así las pérdidas de calor del edificio. En verano, con la apertura de las lamas, se producirá ventilación por efecto chimenea al dejar pasar el aire caliente a través de los patios hasta disiparse por la cubierta. Por la noche, las lamas se 2 abrirán automáticamente renovando el espacio con un aire más fresco que el diurno. Un eficaz sistema pasivo de regulación térmica que se constituye en motor bioclimático del edificio.
