NIKJOO extended and reconfigured a 1930’s terrace home, using hand-made and recycled materials to create a contemporary, light-filled space.  The extension and internal reconfiguration opened up the previously cramped spaces to create an airier, open-plan ground floor, with large sliding doors leading into the north-facing garden.

The contrast between monolithic exterior - clad by NIKJOO in hand-made bricks - and warm, textural interior, has been deliberately heightened. A mix of materials from reclaimed sources and others hand-made by friends of the clients, give a rich tonality to the space.  The ceiling is composed of birch plywood and recycled pine timber joists; concrete floor tiles contrast the original pine timber floor which has been refreshed to give it new life. Reclaimed oak kitchen joinery and hand-made terrazzo hearth tiles personalise the renovated space.  Splashes of colour feature within the details of the building, complementing and lending a subtle playfulness to the home.
