Danish Centre for Coastal Nature and Sport Fishing | 3XN Architects

Our collective understanding that we need to take better care of the marine environment has been growing in recent years. The Centre for Coastal Nature and Sport Fishing will boost this development as a new hub for experiences and knowledge about the impact of humans and climate change on the sea.

Located on the harbour in Assens, the centre connects harbour life, coastal life, history, culture and nature. The building's oval design is based on this context, with a simple and easy-to-read shape that addresses its surroundings in all directions and can become a new landmark for the town and the region.

"For us, it was important to design a building that is both simple and poetic. A building that fits into its surroundings, a building that is warm and welcoming, playful and full of experiences," says Jan Ammundsen, Head of Design and Senior Partner at 3XN. "The oval shape of the building makes it easily recognisable from all sides and provides a flexible layout. In addition, the focus is on warm, robust and natural materials with wood and tile. The design is compact, simple and sustainable."    

The Centre for Coastal Nature and Sport Fishing will be a 700 square metre, two-storey building with a total of three exhibition spaces. The simple inner unit will combine and support activities, exhibitions, associations, local visitors and tourists.

A building that brings people together both inside and out

The centre stands out for its precise building form and robustness. The distinctive oval-shaped roof forms a screen around the building, providing shelter and a necessary resistance to the weather, protecting both the building and visitors.

Towards the town, the roof lifts and welcomes the arrival. With this lift, the shape also integrates a natural access to a rooftop terrace that offers an attractive vantage point.

The central part of the building under the oval roof is designed as a cross shape. This creates different spaces and pockets both outdoors and indoors where people can meet and gather. The small gathering points under the roof make the large harbour space intimate and there will always be a place where you can find shelter and sun.  

The arrival room has views and direct access to outdoor areas to the south, east and west. The room is intended to be a social space that naturally forms the framework for community life and the activities that take place around the building. The building's exhibition spaces are all flexible and can be divided and subdivided into smaller rooms depending on the ongoing exhibitions.

A seascape at eye level

The building fits naturally into the existing maritime environment on the middle pier in the harbour of Assens. A large open pier surface is created around the centre, preserving a rawness from the area's fishing history with shipyards and industrial warehouses. In this way, the exposed area also provides open space and views of both the sea and the town, making the pier a destination and a place to stay for many.

In addition to the interior spaces, the storytelling of the maritime world also takes place in the landscape and seascape surrounding the centre. Three large basins will be established, woven together by a stone reef and wooden jetties. The new stone reef is intersected by small canyons and underwater valleys that create a variety of ecosystems. Here, everyone can explore and learn through their senses - touching, smelling and looking down at the living seabed.

Vores kollektive forståelse om at vi skal passe bedre på havmiljøet vokser i disse år. Denne udvikling skal Kyst- og Lystfiskercenteret sætte skub i som et nyt centrum for oplevelser og viden om menneskers og klimaforandringernes påvirkning på havet.

Centeret lægger sig med sin placering på Midtermolen i Assens side om side med Lillebælt og forbinder havneliv, kystliv, historie, kultur og natur. Bygningens runde design tager afsæt i denne kontekst med en enkel og let-aflæselig form, der henvender sig hele vejen rundt og som kan blive et nyt vartegn for byen og landsdelen.

”For os har det været vigtigt at designe en bygning som på en og samme tid er enkel og poetisk. En bygning som passer ind i omgivelserne, en bygning som er varm og velkommende, legende og oplevelsesrig,” siger Jan Ammundsen, designansvarlig og senior partner hos 3XN. ”Bygningens ovale form gør den let genkendelig fra alle sider og giver et fleksibelt layout. Hertil er der fokus på varme, robuste og naturlige materialer med træ og tegl. Designet er kompakt, enkelt og bæredygtigt.”     

Det nationale Kyst- og Lystfiskercenter bliver en bygning på 700 kvadratmeter i to etager og med i alt tre udstillingsrum. Den simple indre enhed vil på praktisk vis kombinere og understøtte aktiviteter, udstilling, foreningsliv, lokale gæster og turister.

En bygning, der samler folk både inde og ude

Bygningen tager sig ud ved sin præcise bygningsform og robusthed. Det særprægede ovalformede tag danner skærm omkring bygningen, der giver ly samt en nødvendig modstandsdygtighed overfor vejret og beskytter således både bygning og de besøgende.

Mod byen løfter taget sig og byder ankomsten velkommen. Med dette løft integrerer formen samtidig en naturlig adgang til en terrasse på taget, der tilbyder et attraktivt udsigtspunkt.

Den centrale del af bygningen under det ovale tag er tegnet som en krydsform. På denne måde skabes der forskellige rum og lommer både udendørs og indendørs, hvor folk kan mødes og samles. De små samlingspunkter under taget gør det store rum på havnen intimt og der vil altid være et sted, hvor man kan finde læ og sol.  

Ankomstrummet har udsigt og direkte adgang til udearealer mod syd, øst og vest. Rummet tænkes som et socialt sted, der naturligt danner ramme for foreningsliv og de aktiviteter, der foregår omkring huset. Bygningens udstillingsrum er alle fleksible og kan opdeles og inddeles i mindre rum afhængig af formidlingen, som pågår.

Et havlandskab i øjenhøjde

Bygningen falder naturligt ind i det eksisterende maritime miljø på Midtermolen i Assens. Omkring centeret skabes en stor åben moleflade, som bevarer en råhed fra områdets fiskerihistorie med skibsværfter og industripakhuse. Det blotlagte område giver på denne måde også plads til lys og udsigt udover havet og ind over byen og gør molen til en destination og et opholdssted for mange.

Udover de indre rum foregår fortællingen om den maritime verden også i land- og havlandskabet omkring centeret. Der etableres tre større bassiner som væves sammen gennem et stenrev og træbrygger. Det nye stenrev gennemskæres af små kløfter og undervandsdale, der skaber forskellige økosystemer. Her har alle mulighed for at gå på opdagelse og lære gennem sanserne - røre, dufte og se ned på havets levende bund.
