Humo House | Iván Bravo Arquitectos

This house was commissioned 10 years ago and only two years ago it was decided to start the project. Despite all this time, both the client's requirements and the site have remained exactly the same. The clients are a couple who have never lived together, each of them lives in their own flat, just a few metres away on the same street in the capital. Therefore, this holiday home is the first time they will have their beds under the same roof.

Located in the south of Chile, in a natural clearing on a long piece of land that ends in a lake. It is flanked by a row of trees on one side and a small stream on the other. The height of the trees and the dense low bushes disorientates anyone trying to look for any element of the distant context. Only the direction in which the river flows make it possible to locate the lake, behind a dense layer of vegetation.

Humo house is an exercise on domestic dichotomies. Starting from a cube of 11m side with two of its faces split in half, the whole project revolves around the articulation of opposing pairs. The two larger facades open to distant views of the lake and to the site on ground floor; the two smaller ones are almost entirely blind, sheltering the entrance on the lower corner.

All the public areas share one half of the house on an open space of the full height; while intimates ones are distributed on three levels of the other half, just large enough to accommodate the owners and their friends visiting. Because the project celebrates the instance of sharing in the common areas, a long table made from a fallen larch trunk uses almost all the ground floor space, serving as dining table and kitchen unit. On one side of it the floor is lowered one step to give the necessary height for comfortable cooking while sharing the same surface of diners.

The two master bedrooms are on the first floor, one for her and one for him. The facing doors and the shared corridor allows a degree of intimacy between the two without altering their independence, giving room to that delicate intermediate point where they cohabit separately. On the second floor a study room opens to the triple height from above, and the geometry of the house and the big roof gets present by strangling to the very minimum one side of this floor, while quickly opening up to 5m on the other side.

Both interior and exterior are clad in raw timber slats stained one by one. The roughness of the material and the different shades of gray gives the house a timeless appearance, blending it with the always foggy mornings that gives name to this area. A winding path connects two small ponds, passing through the house entrance and terrace, and continuing across the stream to a fire pit. Continuing through the trees will lead to a small bay in between the dense vegetation, where you get a first glimpse of the lake.

Esta casa fue encargada hace 10 años y solo hace dos se decidió dar inicio al proyecto. A pesar de todo este tiempo, tanto el requerimiento de los clientes como el sitio se mantuvieron exactamente iguales. Los clientes son una pareja que nunca ha convivido, cada uno vive en su propio apartamento, a pocos metros de distancia en la misma calle de la capital. Por lo tanto, esta casa de vacaciones es la primera vez que tendrán sus camas bajo el mismo techo.

La casa se ubica en el sur de Chile, en un claro natural de un largo terreno que remata en un lago. Flanqueado por una hilera de árboles a un costado y un pequeño riachuelo en el otro. La altura de los árboles y la frondosidad de los arbustos de baja altura desorienta a quien trate de buscar cualquier elemento del contexto lejano. Solo el sentido en que fluye el río permite ubicar el lago, tras una densa capa de vegetación.

Casa Humo es un ejercicio de dicotomías domésticas. A partir de un cubo de lado 11m con dos de sus caras divididas por la diagonal, todo el proyecto gira en torno a la articulación de pares opuestos. Las dos fachadas más grandes se abren a vistas lejanas del lago y al terreno en planta baja; las dos menores son casi completamente ciegas, protegiendo la entrada de la casa en la esquina más baja.

Todas las áreas públicas comparten una mitad de la casa, que es un gran espacio abierto de la altura total del volumen, mientras que los recintos privados se distribuyen en tres niveles de la otra mitad y son solo lo suficientemente amplios para acomodar a los dueños y sus invitados. Ya que el proyecto celebra la instancia de compartir en las áreas comunes, una gran mesa, hecha del tronco de un árbol caído próximo al sitio, usa casi todo el espacio de la planta baja, funcionando como cocina y mesa de comer. A un lado, el suelo baja un peldaño para dar la altura necesaria para cocinar cómodamente, compartiendo siempre la misma superficie con quien come.

Las dos habitaciones principales están en la planta primera, una para ella y una para él. Las puertas opuestas y el corredor compartido permiten un grado de intimidad entre las habitaciones sin alterar su independencia. Dando espacio a ese delicado punto intermedio que existe en cohabitar separados. En la planta segunda una sala de estudio se abre a la triple altura desde arriba. La geometría de la casa se hace presente con su cubierta a 45 grados, reduciendo un lado de esta planta al mínimo, desde el cual se puede tocar el techo, aunque a solo unos pasos se eleva hasta 5m de altura.

Tanto interior como exterior se revisten en listones de madera bruta teñidos uno por uno. La rugosidad del material resalta sobre los distintos tonos de gris dando un aspecto atemporal a la casa, que se mezcla con las mañanas siempre cubiertas de neblina. Un sendero sinuoso conecta dos pequeñas lagunas, pasando por la entrada de la casa y continuando junto al riachuelo, entre los árboles, hasta una pequeña bahía donde el lago se deja ver por primera vez.
