Casa Cometa

This House stranded in the southernmost point of the entire Mexican Republic on the Pacific Sea, from which you can see sunrises and sunsets and that was the base of an Aztec fort and a pirate bastion in ancient times. ¨El Cerro Sagrado¨ now converted into an ecological reserve is located in the small town of Mazunte, Oaxaca. This house is located right on this limit, which also accompanies a walk to descend to the beaches of Mazunte and Mermejita. The capricious polygonal of the property is also defined by a series of local rules from the hand of local trees impossible to be replanted and 28 meters of difference in level from the highest point to the lowest point of the property.

The central concept of the project was to slide orthogonal platforms that generate rules that become viewpoints or spaces for use and that at the same time fit into the topography; freeing up habitable spaces, among them the pool that floats as a lookout, trees and limits of heights and boundaries.

These planes become open and light platforms that house social spaces or viewpoints and dialogue in high contrast with two towers built with local stone that strategically open to the landscape and the wind and close to the sun's rays and bad weather; they also become viewpoints for sunrises and sunsets on their rooftop.

To conclude, two essential structures built with local wood define the palapa that is the main social space and a second structure hanging under one of the viewpoint planes also built with the same wood, working under tension and hidden between the fronds of the trees, where the secondary rooms with a closer relationship with the jungle are based.

One of the main searches for this house was to dilute its scale with the changing landscape of the Oaxacan jungle that changes in dry conditions to be a series of bushes and trees with branches to a lush and exuberant jungle in the rainy season. At the same time working with local materials such as wood, clay and stone; and to make use of very few concrete elements that allow to clear the great openings and the vertical structures of the stairs.

Finally, to emphasize on diluting the limits between the roofed spaces and the open spaces, as well as with the vegetal areas that surround all the architectural structures. The house itself is the relationship between the landscape, the topography and the orthogonal structures framing the views to the sea and the jungle.

Esta Casa encallada en la punta más al sur de toda la República Mexicana sobre el Mar Pacífico, desde la que se alcanzan a ver amaneceres y atardeceres y que fuera base de un fuerte azteca y de un bastión de piratas en tiempos antiguos. ¨El Cerro Sagrado¨ ahora convertido en una reserva ecológica se encuentra en el pequeño poblado de Mazunte, Oaxaca. Esta casa se encuentra justo en este límite que además acompaña un paseo para descender a las playas de Mazunte y Mermejita. La caprichosa poligonal del predio se define también por una serie de reglas locales de la mano de árboles locales imposibles de ser replantados y 28 metros de diferencia de nivel desde el punto más alto hasta el más bajo del predio.

El concepto central del proyecto fue deslizar plataformas ortogonales que van generando reglas que se convierten en miradores o espacios de uso y que al mismo tiempo se encajan en la topografía; librando espacios habitables, entre ellos la alberca que flota a manera de mirador, árboles y límites de alturas y colindancias.

Estos planos se convierten en plataformas abiertas y ligeras que albergan espacios sociales o miradores y en alto contraste con dos torres construidas con piedra local que se abren estratégicamente al paisaje y al viento y se cierran a los rayos del sol y ante un mal clima; también se convierten en miradores a los amaneceres y las puestas de sol.

Para concluir dos estructuras esenciales construidas con madera local definen la palapa que es el espacio social principal y una segunda estructura colgando bajo uno de los planos mirador construido también con la misma madera trabajando a tensión y oculta entre las frondas de los árboles donde se alojan las habitaciones secundarias con una relación más estrecha con la selva.

Una de las búsquedas principales para esta casa era lograr diluir su escala con el paisaje cambiante de la selva oaxaqueña que muda en secas para ser una serie de arbustos y árboles con ramas, a una selva frondosa y exuberante en época de lluvias. Al mismo tiempo trabajar con materiales locales como la madera, el barro y la piedra; y hacer uso de muy pocos elementos de concreto que permiten librar los grandes claros y las estructuras verticales de las escaleras.

Por último, hacer énfasis en diluir los límites entre los espacios techados y los espacios abiertos, así como con las áreas vegetales que circundan todas las estructuras arquitectónicas. La casa en si misma es la relación entre el paisaje, la topografía y las estructuras ortogonales.
