The Dune Piscinas hotel is located in southwestern Sardinia on the Costa Verde, within the Ingurtosu mining park and the protected natural park of the Piscinas dunes, directly on the beach and surrounded by the tallest dunes in Europe.
The hotel’s project is set inside an original structure of a mining warehouse and was developed through interventions of conservative restoration and newly built expansion to accommodate all the functions and services of the hotel.

The project was developed over three years and was conceived as a series of layers. We worked by imagining solutions, adding elements over time, varying what had already been decided and removing existing ones, just as one would when actually living in a place for a long time.
We have broken the certainties of designing to accommodate the fragile and specific nature of this place suspended in time, isolated in nature, and exposed to the power of the elements to protect ourselves from, we have adapted spaces and functions, generating a new level of comfort.

The entrance is located in the original 30-meter long stone gallery through which the mine carts used to pass. The teak floor, interspersed with strips of ebony, recreates the effect of railway sleepers, and the lighting installation on the wall with microLED plates simulates torch flames as a contemporary version of the original torches.

Perpendicular to the main gallery is a secondary one open on both sides that allows a view towards the inside of the hotel, we add a water tank inset in the floor and a sculpture that floats on.
From the entrance gallery, one enters the informal reception space where guests comfortably seat on wicker armchairs around two custom made round basalt tables.

Access to the American bar is through a tunnel of intertwined iron branches designed to emphasize the existing brick arch and characterize the large space of the room originally used as a mineral storage.
The old wooden beams, original stone flooring, stone walls, and the large fireplace of the American bar characterize this large space of 15 meters by 9, where we have placed a large bar counter in stone, glass, and wood, as well as custom-designed furniture in different colored marbles, wood, and woven straw, to create an extremely comfortable environment overlooking the sea.

The fabrics of the upholstered elements have been designed and developed together with a Sardinian weaving artisan to reinterpret traditional textile themes of the island in a contemporary way.
The bar lounge area, furnished with wicker sofas and armchairs together with stone tables, extends outside into the piazza overlooking the sea where the different parts of the hotel face.
All common areas are located on the ground floor of the structure with access from the inside and outside through large windows that maintain a continuous relationship with the surrounding nature.
The restaurants are designed integrating large site-specific artworks, the room that opens onto the beach is bright and furnished with iron tables and traditional Chiavarina wooden chairs with straw seats, while the more intimate and exclusive space is in direct relation with the kitchen visible through a long, dimmable window.
Five round basalt tables and a long wooden and iron table furnish the space entirely decorated with white graffiti on a red background.
The small internal courtyard occupied by a stone and basalt fountain is a secluded and protected place where one can pause, as well as being a connecting space between other hotel functions.

The floor of the internal courtyard, made of bricks recovered during the restoration works, continues inside the large library which houses a wall-to-wall bookcase designed in oak and glass, as well as books on Sardinia and mining themes, and a collection of local minerals.
In the library, as in the entire hotel, sophisticated technology is hidden and integrated into the architectural and furniture elements. Two large paintings slide on the wall revealing a touch screen to be used when hosting presentations and events.

Facing the internal courtyard are the gym and spa, where the sauna overlooks the dunes and custom-made furniture blend with iconic design pieces.
The rooms design project was developed by integrating elements of Sardinian architecture and decoration such as arched alcoves and bas-reliefs in the plastered walls. The floors are made of irregularly sized slabs of Orosei stone, which we also used in the bathrooms in combination with relief-decorated large tiles coverings. The custom-made furniture of the rooms are mainly in oak, straw, and iron, the latter forged with bindings and knots reminiscent of ship ropes. The unique features of each of the 28 rooms have been enhanced by adapting and modifying the design elements, colors, and finishes.

Some of the suites rooms have a large open private space and a small private stone swimming pool. In the master suite, there is a space completely covered in dark basalt slabs with different finishes, almost like a cave, housing a dramatic bathtub and shower.

Il progetto prevede la realizzazione di un hotel all’interno della struttura originale di un magazzino minerario tramite interventi di restauro conservativo e di ampliamento per ospitare tutte le funzioni e i servizi dell’hotel.

L’hotel si trova nella Sardegna sud-occidentale, sulla Costa Verde, all’interno del parco minerario di Ingurtosu e del parco naturale protetto delle dune di Piscinas, direttamente sulla spiaggia e circondato dalle dune più alte d’Europa. Il progetto si è sviluppato nel corso di tre anni ed è stato concepito come una serie di stratificazioni. Abbiamo lavorato immaginando soluzioni, aggiungendo nel tempo elementi, variandone di già decisi ed eliminandone di esistenti così come avviene abitando realmente un luogo per lungo tempo.

Abbiamo scardinato le certezze del progettare per accogliere la natura fragile e specifica di questo luogo sospeso nel tempo, isolato nella natura ed esposto alla potenza degli elementi, per proteggersi dai quali abbiamo adattato spazi e funzioni generando un nuovo comfort. L’ingresso è ricavato nell’ originaria galleria di pietra lunga 30 metri nella quale transitavano i carrelli della miniera. Il pavimento in tek, intervallato da strisce di ebano, ricrea l’effetto delle traversine dei binari e l’installazione delle lampade sulla parete con piastre di microled che simulano la fiamma delle torce è la versione contemporanea delle torce originali. Perpendicolare alla galleria principale si colloca una galleria secondaria aperta da ambo i lati che permette la vista verso l’interno dell’hotel, il pavimento è una vasca d’acqua sulla quale galleggia una scultura. Dalla galleria d’ingresso si accede allo spazio della reception dove l’accoglienza avviene in modo informale comodamente seduti su poltroncine in corda intrecciata intorno a due tavoli rotondi su disegno in basalto.

L’accesso all’american bar avviene attraverso un tunnel di rami intrecciati in ferro battuto pensato per enfatizzare l’arco in mattoni esistente e caratterizzare il grande spazio della sala originariamente utilizzata come deposito dei minerali. Le antiche travi in legno, la pavimentazione in pietra originale, i muri in pietra e il grande camino dell’american bar caratterizzano questo grande spazio di 15 metri per 9 nel quale abbiamo inserito un grande bancone in pietra, vetro e legno oltre ad arredi su nostro disegno in marmi di diverso colore, legno e pagliaintrecciata per ottenere un ambiente estremamente confortevole che affaccia verso il mare.

I tessuti degli elementi imbottiti sono stati disegnati e sviluppati insieme ad un’antica tessitura sarda reinterpretando temi della tradizione tessile dell’isola in modo contemporaneo. L’area lounge del bar arredata con divani e poltrone in corda intrecciata e tavoli in pietra si estende verso l’esterno nello spazio della piazzetta prospicente il mare sulla quale affacciano i diversi corpi dell’hotel. Tutti gli spazi comuni sono distribuiti al piano terra della struttura con accesso dall’interno e dall’esterno attraverso le grandi vetrate che mantengono il rapporto con la natura circostante senza soluzione di continuità. I ristoranti sono progettati integrando grandi opere d’arte site specific, la sala che apre sulla spiaggia è luminosa ed arredata con tavoli in ferro e tradizionali chiavarine in legno e paglia, mentre lo spazio più raccolto ed esclusivo è in relazione diretta con la cucina visibile attraverso una lunga vetrata oscurabile.

Cinque tavoli rotondi in basalto e un lungo tavolo in legno e ferro arredano lo spazio interamente decorato da graffiti bianchi su fondo rosso.

La piccola corte interna occupata da una fontana in pietra e basalto è un luogo raccolto e protetto nel quale sostare oltre che essere uno spazio di raccordo fra altre funzioni dell’hotel. Il pavimento della corte interna in mattoni recuperati durante i lavori di restauro prosegue all’interno dell’ampia biblioteca che ospita in una libreria a tutta parete su disegno in rovere e vetro oltre a libri sulla Sardegna e a tema minerario una collezione di minerali del luogo. Nella biblioteca, come in tutto l’hotel la sofisticata tecnologia è nascosta ed integrata negli elementi architettonici e d’arredo. Due grandi quadri slittano sulla parete rivelando uno schermo touch per ospitare presentazioni ed eventi. Sulla corte interna affacciano la palestra e la spa nella quale la sauna affaccia sulle dune e gli arredi su misura si mescolano a prodotti iconici di design. Il progetto delle camere è stato sviluppato integrando elementi della architettura e della decorazione sarda quali l’alcova ad arco ed i bassorilievi nell’intonaco delle pareti. I pavimenti sono in lastre di misura irregolare in pietra di Orosei, pietra che abbiamo utilizzato anche nei bagni in combinazione con rivestimenti in gres decorati a rilievo. Gli arredi su misura delle camere sono principalmente in rovere, paglia e ferro, quest’ultimo forgiato con legature e nodi che ricordano le cime navali. Le caratteristiche peculiari di ognuna delle 28 camere sono state esaltate adattando e modificando gli elementi del progetto, i colori e le finiture. Alcune delle suite hanno un ampio spazio privato aperto ed una piccola piscina privata rivestita in pietra. Nella master suite si nasconde uno spazio completamente rivestito in lastre di scuro basalto con diverse finiture, quasi una grotta, che ospita una vasca e doccia scenografiche.
