CASAVERA is the transformation in the old fishermen's neighborhood of El Cabanyal, in the city of Valencia (Spain), of an old and humid sports store between party walls, of 135 m² on the first floor, into a bright Mediterranean home; a change of use that pivots on the fact that all the spaces of the house comply with strict accessibility regulations to make life easier for Elies, one of the owners and in a wheelchair since he was 18 years old due to a spinal cord injury caused by an accident.

Along with Elies, entrepreneur and activist for the reduced mobility, also occupying the house are Aurora, dancer, director and multimedia designer; their daughter, Vera, and the four cats of the family: Lupito, Doce, Nosu and Sumi. A convivial group with different desires, temporalities, speeds and relationships whose coordination and synchronization were the key to the way of thinking and designing the house.

The neighborhood's urbanism, which is characterized by its domestic resonance -everything inside it looks like a large interior-, is also remarkable for its hybrid and complex social fabric in the process of adaptation. The street is presented as an extension of the house, where Elies, in his motorized wheelchair, and his family can move around and enjoy the life of the quarter.

In this ecosystem of streets, squares and small squares, huts, colorful buildings, tile and wood facades resistant to the saltpeter of the sea, where is promoted a particular way of life associated with a space and a time that seems to run much slower than that of the bustling city center, is located CASAVERA, the home of Elies, Aurora, Vera and their cats.

The architectural proposal, which is framed within a plot of 25 meters long and 6 meters wide, consists in the rehabilitation of a part of the house facing the street and the construction of a small pavilion, at the back of the plot, 7 meters long. The transition from one building to the other, from the old to the new, is marked by a gradient vector that goes from public to private: while the restoration of the existing area, built with a system of traditional vaults, contains all the common areas (entrance, multipurpose space, bathroom, living room, kitchen-dining room), the new part, built with metal structure and brick, contains the most private area, the rooms with skylights-viewpoints, composed of three windows inclined 15 degrees in blue and yellow, an atomized bathroom and the engine room.

Between both architectures, in the heart of the house, an intermediate space is generated as a patio of 26 m². This place, besides being an element that combines outdoor activities that, due to the mild climate of Valencia, can be carried out all year long, works as a thermodynamic device, since it regulates the temperature by naturally ventilating all the rooms and, as it happens in Sorolla's paintings, at the same time flooding the whole house with the light so characteristic of this part of the Mediterranean.

In other words, the proposal is to have two houses connected through a patio where you have to leave the house to enter the other house. Houses built with the logic of local materials and proximity, which evoke the Mediterranean and the proximity of the sea, also present in the neighborhood of El Cabanyal: clay, wood and ceramics.

The most singular element within the patio is a swimming pool, 5.80 meters long and 1.70 meters wide, and 7 m3, facing south, which articulates and joins the new part with the rehabilitated one. It is a linear water element, expressly requested by the clients, which has an outdoor part and an indoor part, whose use, in addition to recreational/hedonistic, responds to a sporting function: it is the space used by Elies for the health care and physical maintenance of his body.

CASAVERA is a generous, fluid and free of barriers domestic space adapted -in plan and section-, where architectural, material, environmental and spatial solutions have been tested, many of them unexpected, at the service of those who live in it and whose dimensions and proportions, very different from those of a conventional home, are not at odds with good design.

CASAVERA is a house designed to facilitate mutual care and personal autonomy of family members; a refuge of free movement where one can be oneself and where daily domestic situations take place, such as that summer afternoon when we went to visit them and discovered Elies swimming in the pool, while Aurora was preparing her next play in the hammock, the cats were dozing on the mattress in the blue skylight room or climbing the kitchen walls, and Vera, lying down, was playing to draw a house on the clay and colored floor of the patio.

CASAVERA es la transformación en el antiguo barrio de pescadores de El Cabanyal, en la ciudad de Valencia (España), de una antigua tienda de deportes entre medianeras, húmeda y destartalada, de 135 m² en planta baja, a una luminosa vivienda mediterránea; un cambio de uso que pivota sobre el hecho de que todos los espacios de la casa cumplen con una estricta normativa de accesibilidad para facilitarle la vida a Elies, uno de los propietarios y en silla de ruedas desde los 18 años por una lesión medular a causa de un accidente.

Junto a Elies, empresario y activista de la movilidad reducida, también ocupan la vivienda Aurora, bailarina, directora y diseñadora multimedia; la hija de ambos, Vera, y los cuatro gatos de la familia: Lupito, Doce, Nosu y Sumi. Un grupo convivencial con distintos deseos, temporalidades, velocidades y relaciones cuya coordinación y sincronización fue clave en la forma de pensar y diseñar la vivienda.

El urbanismo del vecindario, que se caracteriza por su resonancia doméstica -dentro de él todo parece un gran interior-, también es destacable por su tejido social híbrido y complejo en proceso de adaptación. La calle se presenta como una extensión de la casa, donde Elies, en su silla de ruedas motorizada, y su familia pueden moverse y disfrutar de la vida del barrio.

En este ecosistema de calles, plazas y plazuelas, barracas, edificios de colores, fachadas de azulejos y madera resistentes al salitre del mar, donde se promueve un particular modo de vida asociado a un espacio y a un tiempo que parece discurrir mucho más lento que el del bullicioso centro de las ciudades, se localiza CASAVERA, la vivienda de Elies, Aurora, Vera y sus gatos.

La propuesta arquitectónica, que se enmarca dentro de un solar de 25 metros de largo y 6 de ancho, consiste en la rehabilitación de una parte de la casa vinculada a la calle y la construcción de un pequeño pabellón, al fondo de la parcela, de 7 metros de longitud. El paso de una construcción a otra, de la antigua a la nueva, está marcado por un vector gradiente que va de lo público a lo privado: mientras que la restauración de la zona existente, construida con un sistema de bovedillas tradicionales, alberga todas las zonas comunes (entrada, espacio multiuso, cuarto de baño, salón, cocina-comedor), la parte nueva, edificada con estructura metálica y ladrillo, contiene el área más privada, de habitaciones con lucernarios-miradores, compuesta por tres ventanas inclinadas 15 grados de color azul y amarillo, un cuarto de baño atomizado y la sala de máquinas.

Entre ambas arquitecturas, en el corazón de la casa, se genera un espacio intermedio que es un patio de 26 m2. Este lugar, además de ser un aglutinador de actividades al aire libre que, por el clima benigno de Valencia, se pueden realizar todo el año, funciona como dispositivo termodinámico, ya que regula la temperatura ventilando naturalmente todas las estancias y, como sucede en los cuadros de Sorolla, inundando a la vez toda la vivienda de la luz tan característica de esta parte del Mediterráneo.

Dicho en otras palabras, la propuesta son dos viviendas comunicadas a través de un patio donde hay que salir de la casa para entrar en la casa. Unas casas construidas con las lógicas de los materiales locales y de proximidad, que evocan el Mediterráneo y la cercanía del mar, presentes, además, en el barrio de El Cabanyal: el barro, la madera y la cerámica. 

El elemento más singular dentro del patio es una piscina de 5,80 metros de largo y 1,70 metros de ancho, y 7 m3, orientada al sur, que articula y une la parte nueva con la rehabilitada. Se trata de un elemento lineal de agua, solicitado expresamente por los clientes, que tiene una parte en el exterior y otra en el interior, cuyo uso, además del recreativo/hedonista, responde a una función deportiva: es el espacio que utiliza Elies para el cuidado y mantenimiento físico de su cuerpo.

CASAVERA es un espacio doméstico generoso, adaptado -en planta y en sección-, fluido y libre de barreras donde se han ensayado soluciones arquitectónicas y de materiales, ambientales y espaciales, muchas de ellas inesperadas, al servicio de quienes la habitan y cuyas dimensiones y proporciones, muy distintas a la de una vivienda convencional, no están reñidas con el buen diseño.

CASAVERA es una casa diseñada para facilitar los cuidados mutuos y la autonomía personal de los miembros de una familia; un reducto de libertad de movimiento donde uno puede ser uno mismo y donde tienen lugar situaciones domésticas tan cotidianas como la de aquella tarde de verano que fuimos a visitarlos y descubrimos a Elies bañándose en la piscina, mientras Aurora preparaba su próxima obra en la hamaca, los gatos dormitaban sobre el colchón del cuarto del lucernario azul o trepaban por las paredes de la cocina, y Vera, tumbada, jugaba a dibujar una casa sobre el suelo de barro y colores del patio.
