Old House New House | Maria Donoghue

This cedar-clad extension is an insertion into an existing traditional farm complex. By reorganising the house and site, an entrance courtyard is formed, and the south-facing garden & orchard is directly addressed by the main living spaces.
It is a discreetly-lit, sculpted counterpoint to the more rigid, cellular interior of the existing refurbished house, achieved through material selection, building form and spatial truth.
When viewed from the road, it is read as an element of a composition of roofs. The untreated cedar cladding gives texture and sharpens the building profile while the ageing fabric subtly ensures that the original house dominates.
