Smania: Haute couture of woodworking
Alberto Smania, founder of the company that bares his name, was captain of the Air force and an official Rally pilot for Fiat. In 1967 , in his artisan workshop where iron cast railings and gates are produced , with the iron scraps he conceives his first table .
Its exactly from this table that emanates the soul of Smania and an entrepreneurial vision that will generate the imprint of the company ,along with the passion for beauty , the research for the latest materials, the exclusivity in forms and nature, and the implementation of tables, bookcases , seatings , beds and accessories.In 1972 Smania participates for the first time to the Salone del Mobile di Milano, im the meantime from Padova his creations begin being brough abroad .
Rattan and Bamboo are the main characters of the production in the 1970’s , they look abroad in taste, exotic and colonial with a a manual ability to braid and entwine materials, then its briar wood’s turn (American walnut, elm and myrtle, refined finishes that Smania much before others discover – shaped and polished into art : it’s the economic boom of the ‘80’s.
The end of the ‘90’s is synonym of flamed Wenge’ its a collection that knowingly joins metals with leathers its a perfect combo o fan ethnic taste and Italian contemporary style .

Today as 40 years ago, Smania furniture are true pieces of art , dedicated to those demanding clients that look for beauty & elegance that desire t chose that which distinguish them.
The company has never lost the characteristics of “the carpenter shop” to this day there are machines that cannot replace the able hands of those that choose ,cut and sew the wooden veneers as though they were true tailors of wood. Faithful to its entrepreneur vision, Smania never truly did industrialize the production preserving the craftsmanship , this is the secret that until the product remains recognizable and differs from all the rest always a step ahead.
With the collections all the main rooms in the home can be furnished and enhanced by the vast selection of accessories , from lamps to decorative panels to vases each piece conceived and generated by Smania.
The same “tailor shop” flexibility is the key of success of Smania’s CONTRACT section, that has made it so that Smania has developed complete projects for hotels,presedential suites,restaurants,club house, theatres, yachts presidential offices in allo f the world.
Today Smania production is Made in Italy and is located in Cazzago di Pianiga (VENEZIA), it is exported in all parts of the world from East to West and North to South, no boundaries are conceived, 90% of the furnitures are sent abroad from Russia, to Ukraine, Middle East and China . Smania: A true work of art
Smania is the only company in the industry that use “burr” walnut veneer , it is a part of the walnut tree that is very precious & delicate , a great amount of knowledge is required in order to select the veneer sheets and in the working process .
Burr walnut better known in Italian as “PIUMA DI NOCE= feather of the walnut, is found in the upper branching of the tree and appears only in those points where the branches begin to divide ,and where the wood naturally entwines itself . Thanks to the “forking” effect of the wooden sections a feather- like image appears.
The selection of the veneer sheets is the first step, only knowledgeable eyes know how to distinguish the best from the rest and therefore suitable for Smania standards. Each sheet is singularly chosen, an important note is that that in order to stock 200sqm , 15.000 sqm have been closely examined.
Most wooden veneers have a similar flame in each sheet making it quite simple to match,
Whereas burr walnut (as in briar root) the flame differs from sheet to sheet.
Working the burr walnut can be considered a true art, it’s the “haute couture”- the tailor shop of wooden veneer. Each sheet of veneer is paired and sewn together with a special sewing machine and is all handcrafted .
Each piece is carefully selected and numbered in order to create a piece of furniture taking care of the natural wooden pattern that is created by the feather effect of the burr walnut, if a perfect match is not made , the piece is thrown out and it’s a must that to start over.
The search for the perfect match makes it so that almost 50% of the veneers acquired are cast aside during the pairing process, thus meaning that each piece is authentic & unique.
During the Salone del Mobile, Smania presents the unreleased GRAY finish of the essence, a unique warm nuance that NO other can boast.
