Biblioteca Municipal de Boadilla del Monte

The project to refurbish the Casa de la Cultura in Boadilla del Monte for its use as a new municipal library and theater is based on a 1980s building that originally hosted two somewhat confusingly mixed functions. The new design envisions the building as a public-oriented space, leveraging the urban, programmatic, and material aspects of the original structure. Each of these elements has been reorganized to create a contemporary, collective facility.

The first strategy involves separating the building into two distinct parts. This transformation from one building into two generates new independent entrances that, when facing each other, create a public space in the form of an elevated plaza above the surrounding streets. This intermediate space, a hardscaped and accessible plaza, serves as the entryway to both the library and the theater.

The second strategy focuses on materials. The new design retains brick as the primary façade material, aiming to blend innovation with tradition. Ceramics are prevalent in Boadilla’s urban context, visible in nearby heritage elements such as the wall of the 18th-century Gardens of the Palace of Infante Don Luis and the 13th-century Church of San Cristóbal.

Externally, the two parts of the building are expressed as materially identical volumes of differing sizes.

The third strategy is structural. The original building was designed with intermediate floor columns working in tension, supporting the theater roof via large trusses in a sloped roof that enclosed an unused space. The project reverses the load direction, converting these columns to work in compression, transferring loads to two large post-tensioned beams in the theater ceiling. This optimization of urban volumetry allows for the creation of a new, expansive reading room beneath the roof.

The refurbishment of the Boadilla library and theater fully utilizes the site’s conditions: it creates an independent theater entrance, raises the roof to the maximum allowable height, and reverses the structural behavior, proposing a new double-height reading space with north-facing overhead light on the top floor. Finally, the façade’s materiality is reorganized to enhance the relationship between the building, its program, and its heritage surroundings.

El proyecto de rehabilitación de la Casa de la Cultura de Boadilla para su uso como nueva biblioteca y teatro municipal trabaja sobre un edificio de los años 80 que albergaba dos usos mezclados de forma algo confusa. El nuevo edificio se plantea como un lugar de vocación pública, que se construye sacando provecho de las condiciones urbanísticas, programáticas y materiales del edificio original. Se ha reordenado cada uno de esos parámetros para proyectar un nuevo equipamiento de voluntad contemporánea y colectiva.

La primera estrategia consiste en separar el edificio en dos partes. Pasamos de un edificio a dos edificios, generando nuevos accesos independientes que, enfrentados, construyen un lugar público en forma de plaza elevada sobre la cota de las calles que lo rodean. Un espacio intermedio, una plaza dura y accesible a la que se abren las entradas a biblioteca y teatro.

La segunda de las estrategias es matérica. El nuevo edificio mantiene el ladrillo como material de fachada, con la voluntad de aunar innovación y tradición. La cerámica está muy presente en el contexto urbano de Boadilla, incluso en elementos patrimoniales cercanos como la tapia de los Jardines del Palacio del Infante Don Luis del s. XVIII o el conjunto de la Iglesia de San Cristóbal del s. XIII.

Cada una de las dos partes del edificio se manifiesta al exterior en sendos volúmenes idénticos en lo material y de tamaños diferentes.

La tercera estrategia es estructural. El antiguo edificio fue construido para que los pilares de las plantas intermedias trabajaran a tracción, sujetando el techo del teatro desde unas grandes cerchas en una cubierta inclinada que cobijaba un espacio sin uso. El proyecto invierte el sentido de las cargas y esos pilares pasan a trabajar a compresión, descargando sobre dos grandes vigas postesadas en el techo del teatro. De esta forma, optimizamos las condiciones urbanísticas a nivel de volumetría consiguiendo bajo la cubierta una nueva gran sala de lectura.

La rehabilitación para la biblioteca y teatro de Boadilla exprime las condiciones del lugar: se construye un acceso independiente al teatro; se eleva la cubierta hasta la altura máxima permitida y se invierte el comportamiento estructural, proponiendo un nuevo espacio de lectura de doble altura y con luz cenital de norte en la última planta y, finalmente, se reordena la materialidad de fachada para matizar la relación con el exterior del programa y del edificio con su entorno patrimonial.
