Beatriz Matos Castaño and Alberto Martínez Castillo founded the professional firm Matos Castillo Arquitectos in 1985. Both of them are also involved in teaching. Beatriz, PhD Architect with the thesis "Eduardo Chillida, Arquitecto", has been a design professor at the Universidad Europea de Madrid UEM (1997-2021) and at the ETSAM, UPM, (1989-2003). Alberto, PhD Architect with the thesis "Max Bill: Variaciones sobre la búsqueda de la belleza" is a full professor of design at the ETSAM, UPM, (1987-2023) and has been a professor at CEU Arquitectura (2000-2001) and UEM (2010-2020). They have also been visiting professors at various Schools of Architecture, including the Universidad de Navarra, the Universidad del País Vasco (UPV), the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia (ETSAV), the Universidad Ricardo Palma (Lima, Peru), the Universidad de Alcalá de Henares, and the Institut for Architectur und Raumplanung (Liechtenstein)...


From the outset, they began a professional practice based mainly on architectural competitions as a means of combining research and design practice. They regularly participate in roundtables, workshops, summer courses, conferences, exhibitions, and have been part of numerous competition juries. They have also organized several cycles of conferences and exhibitions as curators.

Their work has been widely published in national and international books and magazines. Among their built works, noteworthy examples include the Garay Industrial Warehouse, the Casino de la Reina Park and Day Center in Madrid, the police stations of Albacete and Logroño, the unfinished Goya Museum in Fuendetodos, and more recently, the rehabilitation of the Library of Boadilla. Dedicated for years to research in social housing, they have built several social housing buildings as a result of awards in competitions. Currently, they are carrying out the construction of the Faculty of Medicine in Badajoz and the rehabilitation of the Convent of Las Salesas in Pamplona. They have received over fifty awards in architectural competitions and numerous awards and recognitions for their built work. Among the latter: the International Andrea Palladio Award 1993 (IV edition Vicenza, Italy), the II Exhibition of Young Spanish Architects Award 1992, several Madrid City Council Architecture Awards (1998, 2001, 2003), Community of Madrid Quality Awards (2000, 2003, 2005), COAM Awards (2000, 2005, 2021), and have been finalists on two occasions (1999, 2004) in the FAD Awards.
